⚓ The Barra Lighthouse
Ílhavo, Portugal – The tallest lighthouse in the country
The tallest in Portugal
You know, friend, the Barra Lighthouse stands on the beach of Ílhavo, at the entrance of the Aveiro Lagoon. It is the tallest lighthouse in Portugal – 62 metres high – and the second tallest in Europe. At sea level, its light reaches 66 metres of altitude. At the time of its construction, it was the sixth tallest masonry lighthouse in the world.
⚓ The wait that lasted 37 years
The need for a lighthouse at the Aveiro bar was urgent. The flat coast deceived sailors, and the fog demanded a powerful light. The first decision was made in 1856, but the lantern only lit up in 1893 – 37 years later. The project suffered delays due to land disputes and technical choices. Engineer Paulo Benjamim Cabral started the construction in 1885, and engineer José Maria de Melo e Mattos finished it. The result is a monumental work that saved countless lives.
✨ The eyes of the giant
A first‑order Fresnel lens (920mm focal distance) projects a characteristic light: groups of four white flashes every 13 seconds, visible for 23 nautical miles – about 43 kilometres. The lighthouse was originally fuelled by oil, but in 1950 it was electrified. It never stopped watching over the sea.
⚓ Defending the lighthouse
This lighthouse is not a forgotten ruin. In 2018, on its 125th anniversary, it was the most visited lighthouse in Portugal – over 15 thousand people climbed to the top. The municipality of Ílhavo aims to turn it into a "museum‑quality heritage site", alongside the Vista Alegre Museum. The project “23 Milhas” (23 miles) keeps the memory alive, and the community refuses to let it become just a postcard.
🐺 Wolf's Observation
The light of this lighthouse is not measured only by its lens or nautical miles. Its true strength lies in how the people of Ílhavo embraced it and refuse to let it become just a "monument". The "23 Milhas" project and the ambition to make it a great museum prove that memory, when well kept, lights the way to the future.
Defend it. Climb it. Tell its story. And never let the fog erase the courage of those who built it.
