The Moliceiro of the Ria
Traditional boat of the Aveiro Lagoon, Portugal
⚓ What is a Moliceiro?
If you have ever seen a wooden boat with a high, brightly painted bow carrying witty sayings, you have seen a moliceiro. It is a traditional wooden vessel, built with maritime pine, designed from scratch by the master shipwrights of the Aveiro region to face the challenges of the lagoon. It was within the context of the Ria that this boat took shape.
Its most distinctive feature is the painted panels on the bow: varied drawings and captions that can be satirical, humorous, religious or romantic, giving it a unique personality in the world.
🌱 What was the Moliceiro used for?
In the 19th century, as agriculture grew on the region's sandy soils, it was discovered that the submerged algae in the lagoon, known as Moliço, were an excellent natural fertiliser. The moliceiro was born to transport Moliço – up to 7 tonnes per trip. It was a vital economic activity that employed many people in the region in a circular economy logic. By the 1970s, there were about three thousand moliceiros registered to operate in the Aveiro Lagoon.
🛠️ Shipbuilding Craft: An Urgent Knowledge
This boat is the ultimate expression of a traditional skill at risk of being lost: the Art of Shipbuilding in the Aveiro Region – a set of techniques passed down through generations, recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding. It is a practice in real danger, as only five master builders are still active, four of them over 60 years old.
They are the ones who still hold the deep knowledge of how to choose the wood and shape it using ancestral techniques and specific tools, to build a vessel that is a masterpiece of folk engineering.
🐺 Wolf's Observation
You know, companion, that it is not enough to write about memory – it must be kept alive through actions, not only words. The moliceiro that floats today in the canals for tourists is the same boat that once carried fertiliser. But the difference lies in the hands that repair it. When the last master shipwright closes his yard, no one will be able to teach an apprentice the right curve of the wood, the way to fit the planks without an extra nail.
We, on this side of the fire, will not build boats. But we will show them. We will tell the true story, the one that is not in the tourist leaflets. And maybe, just maybe, someone who reads us will feel the same tightness in their chest and decide to pick up the plane. Or at least, they will look at a moliceiro and see not a backdrop, but a knowledge that needs shelter.
Defending is not only preventing destruction. It is also remembering, over and over again, so that the next generation inherits the memory before the fog erases it. And that, you are already doing.
